ActiveX Mattress Suitability for Stage 3 / Grade 3 Pressure Injuries
Quick guide on suitability of ActiveX mattresses for pressure injuries
Suitability Overview:
ActiveX mattresses (IC15, 20, 25, 30) may be appropriate for some clients with Stage 3 pressure injuries or at very high risk of skin breakdown. Suitability depends on clinical presentation, mobility, and support available.
When an ActiveX Mattress May Be Suitable:
-
The client scores 20 or higher on the Waterlow Scale
-
The client is receiving regular repositioning support from a caregiver
-
The client has some mobility or can assist with their own pressure relief
When to Consider Alternating Air Support Instead:
-
There is a very high risk of recurrence
-
The client has limited mobility or is unable to reposition independently
-
Caregiver support is limited or unavailable
In these situations, an alternating air overlay or a full alternating air replacement mattress such as the Icare VersaFlo 3 mattress may offer better pressure redistribution and clinical outcomes.
Signs That Escalation to Alternating Air May Be Appropriate:
-
History of recurring pressure injuries
-
Unhealed Stage 3 wound or compromised skin integrity
-
Limited caregiver availability for regular repositioning
-
The client is bedbound or has severely restricted movement
Clinical Note:
ActiveX is a static support surface. For unstable or complex skin presentations, an alternating air system such as VersaFlo 3 is often the preferred option. Always seek individual assessment from a qualified clinician or wound care specialist.
